Hericium erinaceus (Monkey Head Mushroom)
 
 
Artificial cultivation of Hericium erinaceus was successful at the Directorate of Mushroom Research using indigenous tissue culture from a mushroom fruit body collected during mushroom surveys. H. erinaceus is a very rare mushroom and declared in the red list of endangered species in various European countries. The artificial cultivation of H. erinaceus is mainly done on saw dust, sugar cane, bagasse, cotton seed hulls or chopped paddy straw based substrate medium in the world, however we have used autoclaved wheat straw which is commonly available in most parts of country. The optimum temperature for fructification is between 20-25C H. erinaceus is medicinally important mushroom used for inhibiting the growth of various kinds of cancers due to various polysachharides.
